インターアカデミーパートナーシップ（IAP）の地域ネットワークの一つであり、日本からは日本学術会議が加盟しているアジア科学アカデミー・科学協会連合（以下、AASSAという。）には、個別のテーマを取り扱うSpecial Committees（特別委員会）が設置されており、このうちWISE（Women in Science and Engineering）委員会は、アジア太平洋地域内の科学教育の推進、科学・工学における女性の活躍推進を目的として活動している。
この度、AASSA WISEシンポジウムを日本で開催し、STEM（科学・技術・工学・数学）分野の女性研究者の支援活動について議論するとともに、アジア・太平洋地域におけるSTEM分野の女性研究者の現状について意見交換を行う。加えて、女性研究者間の恒常的なネットワークを構築し、女性研究者の活躍を後押しするためのメンタリングや支援策の共有を図る。
