International Activities
As the representative organization of Japanese scientist community, Science Council of Japan (SCJ) is carrying out several international activities in cooperation with other national academies and international academic organizations.
1. International Collaboration with Academic Organizations
G-Science Academies meetings
Since 2005, the G-Science Academies meetings have been convened annually by the national academies of G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States). Ahead of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, the national academies discuss and present joint statements with recommendations on global challenges, bringing scientific knowledge and expertise into the political discussion for the betterment of the world, and submit the statements to national leaders.
Science 20 (S20)
Since 2017, the academy of the G20 Summit host country serves as the chair academy, and the science academies of the G20 members, including the Science Council of Japan, jointly prepare a collective statement.
The joint statement is submitted to the leader of the G20 host country or to ministers responsible for science and technology policy.
Science Council of Asia
The Science Council of Japan has promoted academic cooperation in Asia by hosting the Asian Conference on Scientific Cooperation (ACSC) from 1993, inviting scientists from across the region.
In 2000, this initiative was developed into the Science Council of Asia (SCA), which now brings together 31 member institutions from 18 countries and regions, with its secretariat hosted by the Science Council of Japan.
Exchanges with Academies Overseas
The program focuses primarily on bilateral exchanges to share views and information on academic research.
Contributions to International Academic Organizations
Science Council of Japan(SCJ) is affiliated with major international academic organizations, including ISC (International Science Council) and IAP (InterAcademy Partnership). In order to respond to the activities of these international academic organizations, SCJ has established various subcommittees under the Committee for International Affairs and/or the Committees Based on Fields of Specialties.
International Academic Organizations
As part of its efforts to facilitate scientific development, SCJ also sends delegates to international conferences and events hosted by these organizations with an eye to building stronger bonds with academic societies across the globe and promoting international exchanges about scientific research.
Participation in Future Earth
Future Earth is the global research platform providing the knowledge and support to accelerate our transformations to a sustainable world.
2. International Conferences and Symposia
International Conference on Science and Technology for Sustainability
To address global challenges such as environmental degradation, it is essential to mobilize scientific knowledge in pursuit of sustainable development. In this context, the Science Council of Japan has convened annual meetings since 2003 to examine specific sustainability-related issues from multiple perspectives.
Co-hosting International Conferences
Since 1953, the Science Council of Japan has co-hosted high-priority, interdisciplinary international conferences held in Japan in cooperation with academic research organizations. These conferences also include public lectures for the general public to share research outcomes with society. Some of these international conferences have also been honored by the attendance of members of the Japanese Imperial Family.
Academy Presidents' Meeting
The Science and Technology in Society (STS) forum holds an annual meeting every autumn in Kyoto with the participation of global leaders in science and technology, policy, business and media. Taking the opportunities of the annual meetings, Science Council of Japan holds the Academy Presidents' Meeting with presidents and representatives of national academies and international academic organizations.
Other Meetings
Other meetings and events organized or supported by the Science Council of Japan across a broad range of activities.
