Science Council of Asia
The Science Council of Japan has promoted academic cooperation in Asia by hosting the Asian Conference on Scientific Cooperation (ACSC) from 1993, inviting scientists from across the region.
In 2000, this initiative was developed into the Science Council of Asia (SCA), which now brings together 31 member institutions from 18 countries and regions, with its secretariat hosted by the Science Council of Japan.

The 24th Science Council of Asia Conference
From November 16 to 18, 2025, the 24th Science Council of Asia (SCA) Conference was held in Islamabad, Pakistan, and online, hosted by the Pakistan Academy of Sciences.
The conference was held under the theme “Food Security, Sustainability, and Biodiversity.” More than 150 participants from approximately 20 countries and regions took part, engaging in wide-ranging discussions from diverse and interdisciplinary perspectives through various programs. During the Board Meeting and General Assembly held within this period, the SCA Declaration of the 24th Conference was adopted unanimously. The next conference is scheduled to be held in November 2026 in Cambodia and online, hosted by the Institute of Technology of Cambodia.

The 23rd Science Council of Asia Conference
From November 30 to December 2, 2024, the 23rd Science Council of Asia (SCA) Conference was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and online, hosted by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.
The conference was held under the theme “Fourth Industrial Revolution and Future Society.” More than 300 participants from approximately 10 countries and regions took part, engaging in wide-ranging discussions from diverse and interdisciplinary perspectives through various programs. During the Management Board Meeting held within this period, the SCA Declaration of the 23rd Conference was adopted unanimously. The next conference is scheduled to be held in November 2025 in Islamabad, Pakistan and online, hosted by the Pakistan Academy of Sciences.
The 22nd Science Council of Asia Conference
From October 19 to 21, 2023, the 22nd Science Council of Asia (SCA) Conference was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, hosted by the National Academy of Sciences, Republic of Korea and Korean Academy of Science and Technology.
The conference was held under the theme “Science for Sustainability, Resilience and Human Well-Being.” More than 250 participants from approximately 15 countries and regions took part, discussing across disciplines how to secure the beneficial use of scientific development, while preventing its malicious use. During the Management Board Meeting and General Assembly held within this period, the SCA Declaration of the 22nd Conference and the SCA Future Strategic Plan 2023 were adopted unanimously. The next conference is scheduled to be held in October 2024 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, hosted by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.
The 21st Science Council of Asia Conference
From March 15 to 17, 2022, the 21st Science Council of Asia (SCA) Conference was held in online, hosted by the Indian Council of Social Science Research.
The conference was held under the theme “Science, Technology & Social Science Research: Together for a Better World.” Due to the resurgence of COVID-19 infections in India, the planned in-person event was canceled, and the conference was conducted entirely online. However, more than 570 participants from approximately 16 countries and regions took part, and researchers engaged in active discussions through various programs. During the Management Board Meeting held within this period, the SCA Future Strategic Plan 2023 Executive Summary was unanimously adopted as the Declaration of the 21st Conference. The next conference is scheduled to be held in October 2023 in Seoul, Republic of Korea, hosted by the National Academy of Sciences, Republic of Korea.
The 20th Science Council of Asia Conference
From March 13 to 15, 2021, the 20th Science Council of Asia (SCA) Conference was held in Guangzhou, China, and online, hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology.
The conference was held under the theme “The Age of New Materials: Innovation for Sustainable Society” and brought together more than 500 participants from approximately 21 countries and regions. The conference served as an important platform for promoting exchanges and collaborations among researchers in Asia and beyond. The next conference is scheduled to be held in April 2022 in India, hosted by the Indian Council of Social Science Research.
The 19th Science Council of Asia Conference
From December 3 to 5, 2019, the 20th Science Council of Asia (SCA) Conference was held in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, hosted by the Myanmar Academy of Arts and Science and sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Myanmar.
The conference was held under the theme “Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development in Asia” and brought together more than 220 participants from approximately 10 countries and regions. The conference served as an important platform for promoting exchanges and collaborations among researchers in Asia and beyond, making a significant contribution to sustainable development and scientific cooperation across the region and internationally. The next conference is scheduled to be held in Shanghai, China, hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology.
