Science 20 (S20)
Since 2017, the academy of the G20 Summit host country serves as the chair academy, and the science academies of the G20 members, including the Science Council of Japan, jointly prepare a collective statement.
The joint statement is submitted to the leader of the G20 host country or to ministers responsible for science and technology policy.

South Africa 2025
On September 23, 2025, the Science 20 (S20) 2025 meeting was held online hosted by the Academy of Science of South Africa. From the Science Council of Japan, Vice President Hibiya participated in the meeting.
Under the theme “Climate Change and Well-being,” participants discussed a joint statement outlining five priority areas and corresponding recommendations.
The joint statement was approved by the academies of each participating country and was released on October 31, 2025.

On July 1–2, 2024, the Science 20 (S20) 2024 meeting was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, hosted by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. From the Science Council of Japan, Vice President Hibiya participated in the meeting.
Under the theme “Science for Global Transformation,” participants discussed a joint statement with the following sub-themes: “Artificial Intelligence: Ethics, Social Impact, Regulation, and Knowledge Sharing,” “Bioeconomy: Shaping the World Toward a Sustainable Planet,” “Energy Transition Process: Renewable Energies, Social and Economic Considerations,” “Health Challenges: Quality, Equity, Access, and Preparedness for Epidemics and Climate Change,” and “Social Justice: Promoting Inclusion, Ending Poverty, and Reducing Inequalities.”
The joint statement was approved by the academies of each participating country and was released on July 31, 2024.
