| December 1948 | First election based on the Science Council of Japan Act; Council Members-elect confirmed on December 20 Note: Council Members were elected by popular vote |
| January 1949 | The Science Council of Japan established under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister (First General Assembly) Note: This resulted in changes to the three former academic organizations. The National Research Council of Japan and the Society for the Promotion of Science were abolished. The Japan Academy became an honorary institution attached to the Science Council of Japan. |
| April 1956 | Control of the Japan Academy transferred to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, thereby becoming independent from the Science Council of Japan |
| July 1970 | Relocated to its current office building (Nogizaka) Note: Premises of the Japan Academy (Ueno) were formerly used. |
| May 1984 | Amendment to part of the Science Council of Japan Act Note: Election of Council Members changed to a system of recommendation based on academic societies |
| January 2001 | Transferred to the jurisdiction of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications as a consequence of the Basic Law on Reforming Government Ministries |
| April 2005 | Transferred back to the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister due to the partial implementation of a new law requiring a revision to the Science Council of Japan Act. |
| October 2005 | Amendment to part of the Science Council of Japan Act. Note: 1. Selection of Council Members changed to a system whereby the Science Council of Japan selects Council Members (co-optation) and recommends them to the Prime Minister. 2. Structure was reorganized from seven-sectional to three-sectional structure and a new category of “Members” established. |
