“The Role of Science for Sustainable Development ”

Approximately 50 participants from 10 member countries and major international, regional and national scientific organizations participated in the General Assembly. The three SCA Joint Project Workshops drew about 20-30 participants each, and the Academic Symposium attracted approximately 100 participants.
At the General Assembly I, the President of ICSU (International Council of Science) gave a speech on the composition, role and goals of ICSU. It was decided that the 7th SCA Conference would be held in Okinawa in June 2007, in cooperation with the 21st PSC (Pacific Science Congress) to enhance a mutual synergy effect. The Director-General of SCJ gave a brief talk on "G8 Academies' Meeting and the Role of Human Science."
The themes of the Joint Project Workshops were "Gender" (Session 1), "Water" (Session 2), and "Ocean Security" (Session 3).
In the opening ceremony, the following three keynote speeches were delivered: "The Role of Institutional Reforms to Decentralized Power and Authority" by Professor A. Vaidyanathan, "Development of Education - Gandhi on India and Japan" by Professor Nobuko Nagasaki, and "Rural Urban Disparity" by Professor Dipankar Gupta.
In the Academic Symposium, three symposia were held: "Rural Urban Disparity," "Rural Infrastructure," and "The Role of Science for Sustainable Development."
At the General Assembly II, the Vice President of the Indian National Science Academy/Chairman, ICSU Regional Committee for Asia and the Pacific, gave a speech on regional committees and the cooperation of scientists between regions.
