‘Affiliation with International Academic Institutions
The Council contributes to the development of international academic activities through the affiliation with many international academic institutions. As of the end of 2000, the Council was a member of 48 such institutions, including the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) and the International Federation of Social Science Organizations (IFSSO). In order to keep in close contact with those international academic institutions, the ICSU subcommittee and other subcommittees under the Standing Committee on International Cooperation energetically investigate and deliberate on international academic cooperation projects and programs of international academic institutions. In addition, some Liaison Committees also act as national committees for corresponding international academic institutions.

‘Organizing and Supporting International Conferences
Many international academic conferences are held in Japan, and leading scientists meet together to discuss recent research results and exchange ideas. The Council cosponsors about eight conferences annually in cooperation with academic societies. In addition, the Council lends its support to around 20 other international conferences held in Japan every year.

‘Delegations to International Conferences
The Council sends around 90 delegates annually to international academic conferences throughout the world in order to strengthen Japan's affiliation with the international academic world, to ascertain the latest trends in science, and to exchange information.

lnternationaI Conferences

‘Bilateral Academic Exchange Programs
The Council has been sending delegations abroad in order to promote mutual understanding in academic fields with specific countries through discussions with leading scientists and policy-makers.

‘The Conference on the Science Council of Asia
In light of East Asia's remarkable development in international society, the Council has been sponsoring annual conferences of the Science Council of Asia since 1993. These conferences serve as forums where representative scientists from nine East Asian countries and Japan meet together, at the Council in Japan, to exchange opinions on the scientific development and basic principles for cooperation in various fields in this region. From 2001 onward, this Conference will be held once a year, the member countries taking turns as the host country.

‘Participation in International Research Programs
In recent years, there has been an increase in international research programs on subjects requiring consideration on a global scale, such as climate changes and environmental issues. The Council conducts studies on these programs in Japan by making and coordinating action plans and promoting liaison among the researchers concerned. The Council sponsors a symposium on the IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Program).
