‘Deliberations on Science-related
Policies Responding to inquiries from the
government, the Council deliberates and reports on such matters as
scientific-research policies, research grants and others. The
Council also considers measures for (1) promotion and advancement of
science and technology, (2) utilization of results of scientific
research, (3) training of researchers, (4) reflection of science on
the administration and the public, and (5) permeation of science in
industries and people's lives.
The Council is authorized to
submit reports and to make recommendations to the government in all
these areas. In keeping up with the progress of the sciences, and
taking into account trends in science, the Council conducts
deliberations on philosophy and methodologies for research and
research programs, inter-, multi- and trans- disciplinary issues, as
well as study subjects requiring global perspectives involving
various disciplines. |

‘Liaison Committee
Activities The objectives of the Liaison
Committees are: (1) to perceive trends in studies, (2) to devise
future research programs and improve research environments, and (3)
to coordinate with research organizations and academic
institutions. |
‘Relations with Academic
Institutions To further strengthen relations
with academic institutions, the Council registers academic
institutions fulfilling necessary conditions as "Registered
Scientific Research Organizations" and designates some others as
"Public Relations Entities Cooperating with Scientific
Organizations". |
‘Public Lectures and
Symposiums In order to bring the benefits of
the results of science to the public, the Council sponsors public
lectures and its district committees hold academic lectures. The
Liaison Committees also play a leading part in actively presenting
various academic issues and holding symposiums in close cooperation
with academic institutions. |

‘District
Committees District committees have been
organized in seven regions-Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki,
Chugoku-Shikoku, and Kyushu-Okinawa-to facilitate exchages of
information between the Council and scientists in these regions,
thus contributing to the promotion of science. |
‘Public Relations The Science Council of Japan, at http://www.scj.go.jp,
publishes the latest information on resolutions adopted at the
Council. Details of current activities of the Council are reported
in the monthly journal, TRENDS IN THE SCIENCES. |
